Dress Pants: The unsung heros of modern style.

Whether your style is more preppy, Street, casual, gothic or minimalist or really any other style, you either already own a pair of dress pants or have pictures saved of your style icons in dress pants that you secretly wish you owned. In 2021, dress pants have made so many undisputed comebacks on socials, main stream media and even in those lowkey connoisseur pages like the sartorialist ( where they technically never went out of style) that I honestly don’t think it’s fair to other pants.

Not owning a pair in this day an age should honestly be some kind of crime. With New age style icons like Harry styles reimagining how dress pants are styled to classic style icons like Alain Delon rocking those perfect big suits that were honestly just so manly and defined the working man for so long. In 2021, there are two important ways dress pants are being worn which I feel I should talk about:

First, is the well tailored, perfectly tapered and ironed, camp. These are the dress pant outfits that are so sharp it’s not even funny. Paired with casual t-shirts, Band tees, sweat shirts, hoodies , those killer t-shirt and denim jacket combos. Not to mention how perfectly they work with white sneakers, laid-back New age sneakers especially low top nikeys, adidas, New balance sneaks(bonus points if the pant colour is in the kicks also) and boots ( Chelsea boots to be precise) These dress pants are perfect for the classic style guy who prefers abit more of a tapered look to their outfits.

Second, are the more heavily constituted, equally well tailored but alot less tapered suit pants. These are alot more Street style and casual and for some reason always end up folded at the bottom or worn with a pair of over the top gucci looking loafers. These are just as equally dashing and versatile. If your into Street style or really just into baggy clothes, these are perfect for you.

No matter how you want to cut this cake, the fact is dress pants are here, they are awesome and you either incorporate them into your wardrobe or miss out on literally the best thing in fashion since the invention of well…. Fashion.

Parting shot.

They are comfy, preppy, Bad ass, sexy and remarkably stylish. Don’t be a Party pooper, get with the program. Also tell me in the comments what you guys think of dress pants, I am interested in what the ladies think and also whether you guys want to know where to get the right kind of dress pants( not the light weight, farthest thing fron stylish ones your dad has worn every year since you were born to work every day, no offense) in nairobi. Until next time, Chao.

Staying Stylish in 2021. Minimalist Edition.

Minimalist style, a term commonly used in modern fashion and style conversations and that I have expressed my love for before on this blog. As we roll ever so quickly into this new year, with trend culture still holding strong and new styles like street style and baggy fashion dominating popular social media platforms, a question arises as to the future of minimalist style.

With the pop of colour and the disregard for conventional fitting rules in contemporary fashion how does a classic style guy with a liking for minimalist aesthetics survive?

In my opinion, he sticks to the same rules, focuses on the same colour palettes and keeps rocking those whites, blacks and greys. But is that enough? Does sticking to the basics make a man stylish, or does it leave one looking overtook by time? I say, classic style never goes out of style.

But maybe you have your basics down, all the usual minimalist colours are in your wardrobe. The white, black, grey, sand, brown, navy, and creams are covered. How do you add a pop of colour, an air of sophistication. I suggest you try these three colours ; green( in all its shades, especially emerald and jungle green) maroon( in shirts and t-shirts, this could be a game changer) and finally other shades of blue( those sky blues and baby blues have a certain fresh and young appeal that “unages” you instantly, for the older guys)

Something else really cool you could try is having alittle more fun with the fit of your clothes, especially with sweatshirts and hoodies. These make you look young and with the times which could come in handy if you are in university or trying to woo a younger lady.

Apart from that, i say us classic style guys need to keep classic minimalist style alive, trends come and go but real style is forever. Adios and stay stylish this 2021.

Plaid, bad investments and inner peace.

Yesterday, I finally dressed up to go into town  and it felt great. With wfh vibes being really strong these past few months and online classes being the order of the day, I haven’t gotten to dress up as much as I would have liked to. Thus, I have developed an overbearing appreciation for any reason to dress up in anything but sweatpants and loose tees. I styled my plain black bootcut jeans with a plain white tee from my shop shilash esntls(I’ll leave a link down below) which is literally my favourite article of clothing right now. I wore my plain white sneakers, that if you follow any of my content you already know are a staple for me. I then added on this beautiful brown, black and white plaid shirt. I did a couple of insta stories and a post and really enjoyed myself.

The fit.

It’s finally December, and after this roller coaster of a year which I’ve already shitted on immensly, I have this weird feeling of fulfillment building in me. Like I have learnt something, even if I don’t know what exactly.
I made a bad investment at the start of this month, a really bad one, the kind that you want to forget but also remember forever. I lost a large amount of money that I’d worked really hard for. What’s funny is as I write this I am not bitter, even though I still hold a special type of hate for the people that stole from me. Who just for you guys safety are a page on insta called alibabagroupke, it’s a scam, a really good one, but a scam nonetheless.

The stinking swindlers

What’s funny is I’m hopeful for the future, as I always am around this time of year, I know I’ll move on, I know I’ll make it out alive and as hard as it is to believe right now I know that I will thrive.
I’m not making resolutions yet but I’m excited for the future. I watched world of calm on hbo a few nights ago and it is the most relaxing thing that’s streaming right now. The first episode had me so relaxed and in awe and I realized that I’m calm, I have been, holding it down no matter how many times the waves have come into shore with a madness in them. I realized, I am peace, I am love and I will thrive.

A world of calm on hbomax

Even though I will hopefully be posting a lot more blogs before the year comes to a close, as soon as I finish my exams (cringe).I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has been reading these blogs, watching my Youtube videos and showing love and support in any way. I really appreciate it and I love you guys. Till next time, have a great week and goodbye. Leave a comment down below about your year and how working from home has been for you, I really appreciate the feedback and we can probably kick up a conversation.

Fall colours : Closet essentials.

There’s just a way it feels, the sun in the evening as I listen to a song I love, it’s been a while since I heard it. The sky a beautiful blue background to white cottony clouds. The sound of chirping birds in the background as I watch eagles cruise the high skies. The nostalgic green of the neighbour’s leafy mango tree, the blossoming leaves lined with an autumn orange. My mind escapes to the coffee table, the black paint is coming off, you can see the brown wood underneath.
Now, just because I live in a country that is right on the equator and experiences an average of two seasons every year that do not include Fall doesn’t mean that I won’t wear fall colours or incorporate them into my closet. So here are a few colours that you should incorporate in your closet to wear on cool, windy, summer days.

1.Brown.
Shades of Brown are characteristic in alot of fall pieces and outfits and look amazing in leafy green and maple backgrounds. The shades I like the most are Sandy Brown and liquer. Brown can work really well in a pair of loafers which can very easily accessorize some of your more relaxed fits. It can also work really well in jackets and accessories.  Sandy brown and lighter brown tones can work great for suit pants and chinos.

2. Orange.
Orange is definitely a nature inspired colour that is really beautiful and can work great as a shirt or T-shirt with a pair of plain white jeans or chinos with a pair of brown khakis. There are also a lot of different shades of orange from more tangerine ones to darker shades of the colour. These all work great for tops and might look really cool as detailing on sneakers.

3. Green.
All shades of green are also pretty cool for autumn, paired with white or black pants, green especially olive green would make really cool outfits. An olive green T-shirt, sweater or shirt would be a perfect addition to your fall closet. A cool outfit off the top of my head would be an olive green sweater paired with grey dress pants and a pair of white sneakers. You can add a lot of interest to this outfit with a bracelet and some dark sunglasses.

4. Blue.
Even though blue is not a typical fall colour, I think navy and even lighter shades of blue would look wonderful with white, black and sandy brown. Blue is obviously a kind of all season colour and can be worn at any time and still look really good which is an amazing feature if your buying something blue to own for the long term. Blue sneakers are also actually looking really good right now and a pair like the airmax 94’s London version would work really well with a pair of cream or white chinos and a plain navy T-shirt or one that is white with navy stripes.

That’s my list of colours to wear in the fall, or in fall weather for those who like me who live in countries without a defined fall season. A lot of these colours are complementary as you have probably noticed in the pictures above. Thank you for reading and make sure to subscribe to this blog for a lot more content on sneakers, style and books.

Style and Literature: A review of 2020(yes! the year)

This year has been pretty tough so far, no social meetings, no school hang outs, and not enough weekend dates. However, it has been riddled with alot more reading, spending alone time and frankly alot more bingeing, that’s both tv shows and food. I have had alot of time this year to read which has been a large portion of my sanity maintenance regiment. The time alone, was pretty weird at first but with the inability to meet with my friends in person I have resorted to voice notes, phone conversations and occasional whatsapp conversations which is actually saying alot for me. I have also spent alot of time meditating and being mindful, thinking of and creating content and rewatching and watching old sitcoms, which I actually really love, just a fun fact about me.

Some I would recommend for anyone who wants to have a good laugh are friends( which is now on netflix, thank God) that 70’s show (which was actually recommended to me at the start of the year by a dear friend and that I ended up enjoying almost too much) and two and a half men. Also as an honourable mention, everybody hates chris is also pretty hilarious.

Laughing, creating and relaxation are my go to all on my lonesome activities. I also have really been grateful for online classes, even though I have actively slept through one or two of them, it’s actually just one. Unlike alot of people my age I really enjoy studying and being in class, weird I know, but I like using my mind to solve problems and really just the routine of regular classes. I also really love what I study. But sometimes I do like to escape from structured scholastic reading and instead grab a fiction book and disappear into a made up word full of adventure. Right now that world is in his dark materials volume two where lyra is now in another world where creatures called Specters devour the souls of adults and live empty cocoons. Some really good fiction books I have read and plan to read include: his dark materials:the full series( ebooks from the alcove bookstore on instagram)Check out my review of his dark materials: northern lights.Spider( a book I got as a birthday present), Robert Fulghum’s It was on fire when I lay down on it which I reviewed on my youtube channel. Click here to watch the review. Bright shiny morning is also a really enjoyable read, I also reviewed it in the above video. I am really excited for my next reads which are Charles Dickens which is said to be an amazing classic, hannibal (spooky) and a short story compilation called 100 creepy little creature stories (which was also a birthday gift).

Anyway, in the dawn of this disaster of a year I am grateful for alot of things, for my life and health, for my family and their wellbeing, for my work and my schooling which have been tough but inspiring and have given me drive. For my youtube channel and this blog which have been great outlets for my pent up creativity. For all my friends who have kept me sane by sharing in my misery and have looked out for me. 2020 has been a b***h of a year but I am kinda glad it has. Thank you for reading and make sure to subscribe to my blog for weekly blogs on style, sneakers, and books among other fun topics.

Book review: Band of Brothers

Set in 1942 at the height of the second world war, Band of brothers is a biographical book that narrates the story of E company, 506th regiment, 101st airborne division of the United states army. The 101st airborne division’s E company more affectionately known as Easy company was a special unit setup by the U.S army during world war two to operate as a parachute unit that would be deployed for special tactical missions. The story starts at Camp Toccoa in july, 1942 when the unit was first set up and where the first men to join the company went through one of the most gruelling training camps the army had seen. The unit had six months to train before they were ready for battle, but for most men who volunteered to join the company, they would rather train here with the best, to become the best than join the army as regular enlisted soldiers. Alot of them were between the ages of 18 and 22, few of them had been in combat before. But after what could only be described as an overwhelming amount of training under their Captain Sobel, who their was a consensus about among the men. They hated him, the men of easy company graduated and were sent into battle for the first time on the december of 1942. Their first mission was a drop over Normandy, france to clear a path for other armed forces that were to arrive alittle later. The mission was successful, and the men got their first taste of battle as a unit. From normandy the men of easy were deployed to bastogne, brecourt manor and finally germany. They were also involved in a drop over Japan at the end of the war but by this time the war in europe was over and most off the men had either been discharged, were injured or dead. Easy company was instrumental in the victory of the american campaign in europe. Major Winters was the longest serving commander of the unit and showed exemplary courage during the war not unlike the rest of his men, replacements and all.

Genre: Non-fiction

Category: Military history.

My reading speed has slowed down abit during the past month or two, but I did have alot of fun reading this book even though it took me alot longer than usual to get through the book which is not relatively large with 336 pages. The author Stephen E. Ambrose is an expert at military history and it is evident in the way the story is worded and how it unfolds. The account Stephen has given is very well researched and put together in a sequential manner. The details are very well researched and the descriptions are vivid. The characters are not only accurately depicted but also interesting and complex. It was an extremely exciting book to read and I will definitely reread this one soon. The end is obviously fore shadowed seeing as it’s based on real life events, but the way it is narrated gives the reader a feeling of anticipation and complicit triumph when the war ends. I did feel a bit nostalgic when the book ended, like I had formed a connection with the unit just by reading their story of comradory and commitment to their fellow soldiers. The style of writing feels appropriate for the story  with accounts being quoted constantly from the writings of the soldiers themselves.

My recommendation: I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys action, or stories based on real life events. It may also be a surprise delight for fans of bromance books. This book is an amazing read and gives alot of insight into what army life was like during world war 2.

Writing and Travelling.

It’s been a while since I have travelled at night to a far away destination. As I write this I am on my way to Limuru to see my grandma who has fallen sick and is there to get medical attention.  It’s fifteen minutes to eight pm right now and It feels alot different to travel as an adult.
Because of where I am going, I have come prepared in full winter attire. I have on a pair of bootcut black jeans, brown leather boots, a plain white t-shirt, a warm grey hoodie layered under my trusty wool inlayed denim jacket and just for good measure, I also have on a scarf and a bowler cap in my bag just incase Limuru is as cold as I remember.

I am awfully secure and prepared as I assume my mum usually was when we made this trip when I was really young, or any other journey for that matter. As a kid I put alot of trust in my mother and her ability to get me anywhere safely. I can remember this one time, my mother was in mombasa and my sister and I were supposed to go and join her. We got put in a truck with these two men who worked for my mom’s company. Now this truck was a heavy duty trailer and had that comfy section right behind the driver’s seat where the drivers took naps when they stopped along the way. My sister and I got on in Limuru, coincidentally which is actually where we used to live back then. I was about five or six years old at this point and having spoken to my mom before boarding this awkward vehicle I was excited to get on the road and also because my mom worked at a milk company then, I was also excited about all the free milk and yoghurt I was bound to get. After the truck was loaded up with cargo and sealed, which I assume is what happened because I was restlessly sitted in the front seat. We left for what was supposed to be a really long journey. I remember the journey starting in the evening and a few minutes after we had left nairobi I was sound asleep in the back compartment, and so was my sister. I remember being woken up by the drivers, who would take turns to drive as they simultaneously got to sleep. We were at a stop, here we got off and stretched our legs, got more snacks, and went to the washrooms. We got back in the truck and continued with our so far really relaxed and sleepy journey. My mom had called again and asked to speak to us so I was feeling secure and eager to see her and the new city she was living in, that we were going to be living in too in a few hours. The rest of the ride involved alot more napping, talking and playing with my sister, asking what seemed like the are we there yet question repeatedly and snacking. Finally I was asleep in the back compartment and I felt something about the air change, I awoke to find that it was dusk. The outside held the scent of the sea and I loved it, it felt so new and different. I was extremely excited at this point and spent the rest of the trip peeping through the drapes that separated the small compartment from the driver’s seat. I asked and found out that we were entering Mombasa. I didn’t fall back asleep, I was way to excited. This place was just like home, but there were alot of subtle differences, first off it was really warm and soon considerably hot. The people dressed and looked very different, the streets connected to bridges that overlooked a whole sea that disappeared into the horizon. The trees looked so different, alot of them were palms and tropical plants, in comparison with the trees back home, these looked peculiar but still beautiful. We rode into mombasa as the sun rised in the sky. I could not wait to see my mom but until then I was satisfied with the scenery and my strawberry yoghurt( I was really into strawberry yoghurt back then).
We finally got to my mum’s new offices where our cargo was unloaded and my sister and I got to see our mum, for the first time in a few months. It was really exciting to be in this new place and to meet all these new people who were extremely friendly and fun to be around. That was my first overnight journey that I can remember and as the car I’m in starts to approach limuru I realize that travel has been an important part of my life so far, that alot of my good memories lie on roads all across this beautiful country I call home. I love to travel, and even though I am an adult now and I can get myself almost anywhere safely I still really appreciate the warmth and security I get from knowing that someone always cares enough to find out if I was safe on my journey.
I plan to travel alot more, and with the grace of God, I plan to make alot more memories on roads and flights all over the world. Signing off, Ian.

Halloween entry: Tough questions.

I always knew I was scared of dying. The idea of seizing to exist, made me instantly nervous. Life is a gift, I understand that now and just as easily as I wake up every morning, I could just not. Death is coming and I know, we all know it. The looming cloud of darkness that walks alongside us, in the shadows waiting to creep up on us when we least expect it. Today I involuntarily watched a video of someone die and I thought I could spot the exact moment when everything went black for him. I found that scared me more than any horror movie (trailer tbh) could ever scare me. A few months back I went on a site who’s name I honestly can’t remember and I watched a video that shook me to my core. Disclaimer here, for anyone who has a weak stomach, it’s about to get gory. In this video there was a small group of people, mostly young men sitted on the ground in what looked like a jungle of some sort. Some other men stood over them holding rifles, they were dressed in turbans. One of the men in the turbans held a machete and stood next to a large pit in the ground. A few seconds in, and one of the men in turbans, one with a gun, prompted one of the sitted men and he stood up and walked over to the pit, lying down next to the man holding the machete. Before the man holding the machete leaned over and in the most casual and effortless way possible, hacked at the man’s neck, striking him three times before his head detached from his body. After he was done he kicked the man and his dismembered head into the pit and stood up straight, looking over at the man with the gun.
The same thing happened to three more of the men before I lost my nerve and stopped watching the video. I didn’t realise I still remembered this video until now but I can’t remember ever being so horrified. It was so rhythmic and soul crushing to watch those men walk over to their death so hopelessly and to watch the butcher hack away at their flesh in such a casual manner. The second victim had to get held down, not because he was against being hacked to death, but simply because of the involuntary spasms his body experienced when its head was chopped off.
Now as I contemplate my fear of death I reflect on my passive, somewhat far away interactions with death and I can’t believe how terified I am of it. Today I offer no solutions, I simply offer questions, are we living to die? Is death a punishment for living? The price to pay? Could hope be so lost in life that death is a welcomed release? As we approach halloween, is death something we should fear or is it something to embrace and celebrate? I honestly don’t know the answers to these questions, but I will continue to ask them, as I continue to reflect and normalize my fear of my mortality.

7 shoes every guy should own.

1. A pair of boots – lately I’ve been obsessed with boots. All kinds of boots are just extremely cool to me and with new brands coming up like ankariflorus and thursday boots , boots have never looked so good. As I write this I am getting my finances  in order to get myself a new pair. Now you may be wondering why I am in such a craze, and I’ll explain. Boots are a type of footwear almost as old as men’s clothing itself . From the American frontier to 18th century England to standard military attire dating back all the way to the early 90’s, boots have been an integral part of men’s footwear for decades. But now let me tell you why you need a pair, apart from the obvious appeal and aesthetical benefits. A boot is a lady magnet, and you may be wondering what I know about this but I can say with great certainty that I have not gotten more compliments on any piece in my outfits more than my boots from the opposite sex. Don’t believe me, try it yourself get a pair even if there not yours, pair them with a simple plain tee and jeans and go out and try to talk to a woman, seriously do it.

Boots

See boots, especially leather ones have the effect of making you look older and more mature and experienced, it’s the same thing a leather jacket does for your look. So boots are most definitely an essential and with all the different styles out in the market now, I guarantee that you’ll be able to find something you like and that works with your style. New boots go for from around ksh 3,000/= to around ksh 7,500/= in Nairobi cbd, but that’s just in regular stores you could definitely get more pricy ones at more high end stores like Sir Henry’s. A second hand pair could set you back between ksh 2,000 and ksh 5,500. When your buying second hand tho, make sure to inspect the piece very carefully to make sure that they are good quality. This would entail testing the leather, which you can do by bending it and looking at how it behaves when you let go. Good leather will revert to it’s original state in a few seconds. Also check for any holes or rips in the fabric and the stitching. Thank me later.

A hype beast sneaker.

2. A hypebeast sneaker– okay, If you don’t know what a hypebeast is, you have probably been living under a rock since like 2010. But just incase you don’t, a hypebeast basically means people or items that are trendy in modern sneaker culture. So these are your yeezys, Nike air Max 95’s, and chanel×Pharel×adidas nmd’s. Okay, I went alittle deep there but these basically mean sneakers that are popping. I am personally not such a huge fan of trendy sneakers, I prefer older versions of dope shoes like Nikes and Jordans. But to have a well rounded collection of shoes it is important to have at least one hype beast shoe. I personally have a pair of air Jordan 1’s by Virgil Abloh under ‘the ten’ collection that I am really comfortable in and that I think express my style really well. Now the best thing about hypebeast sneakers is that there is alot of different styles and designs. So it’s super easy to go through them and find one you like. For a more laid back basic look, the plain white air forces may be a really good choice but if you want a more expressive look, sneakers like the new Jordan× dior collab and yeezy’s extravagant sneakers may be a little more your speed. Most hypebeast sneakers go for about ksh 3,500 all the way to up to ksh 15,000 depending on how exclusive they are and whether they are customized. I wouldn’t recommend shopping for these second hand but resale is a thing with these sneakers, but the only downside is most times they sell for even higher prices on resale.

A dress shoe

3. A good dress shoe -If you’re gonna be in any official setting, and I believe we all are at some point, a good dress shoe is going to be the first basic component of your look. If you work an office job, you can’t live without a dress shoe. Whether it’s for work, a wedding, a funeral or an office party or gala. A good dress shoe will always do, up to and above to keep you looking sharp and dapper. A good dress shoe in my opinion should be made of leather and should be made in a European style. Ones I really like are the oxfords which are now made with variations by numerous shoe makers and Italian dress shoes which have to be the best there is. These can also be boots but should be in a more dressy style. Prices are usually similar to those of boots.

White sneakers.

4. A pair of plain white sneakers – Now, you could choose to ignore everything I’ve said until this point, but don’t ignore this. A plain white sneaker is the most versitile sneaker that exists and I can say that for a fact. If you had to build a small wardrobe on short notice and could only have one shoe, this should be it. What’s also really cool about white sneakers is that they are common and made in as many different styles as there are mammals. So it’s easy to find one that suits you, make sure to get one that is made of good quality fabric and that is easy to clean. Depending on your style the spectrum moves from ones that are made of cotton to ones made of suede and leather. Also they are super cheap as a new pair in Nairobi goes for from around ksh 1000/= to around ksh 2000/= which is at regular stores. Second hand you could get your hands on a pair from ksh 300/= or less, to about ksh 800/=, anything above that is an overprice.

Red Chuck Taylor’s

5. A pair of Chuck taylors/all stars – first off if you don’t know what these are you have probably been living under a bigger rock than the guy who doesn’t know what hypebeast are. Chucks have been a favourite in pop culture and consumer fashion for as long as I can remember. A good quality and well fitting pair of chucks will do great things for any man’s style. I personally own a red pair that I completely love, these are comfortable, cool looking and super functional. These might set you back alittle more than the white sneakers but I promise they are so worth it. Also these aren’t an age specific flex, they are in so many shapes, sizes and colours that every man can find a pair they like. With low tops and high tops and a whole array of different designs and variations, there is a Chuck for everyone. For rap fans, wiz khalifa on the complex show, we went sneaker shopping, says that chucks are his favorite sneaker of all time and that he loves to wear them around. A pair of these goes for a pretty reasonable price even new. A new pair goes for ksh 1500 to about ksh 3000/= for a custom pair. Secondhand you could find these at from ksh 200 all the way to ksh 1000.

Classic black and white colour way vans.

6. A pair of vans – vans are alot like chucks in that they are an every day kind of sneaker that almost anyone can rock. They are comfortable and easy to wear and are pretty sturdy to walk in. They also work with all kinds of different looks, from casual all the way to official. A good pair of vans will last a long time if it’s taken care of. The suede material is something I really like and the unique logo makes the shoe in my opinion quite handsome. Also because they are usually used for skating you can easily get away with owning an older more beat up version. A pair usually goes for from around ksh 2500/= to ksh 4000/= depending on the type and whether it’s customized, I’ll add a few links at the end of the article for good places online to shop for these and other shoes on this list. A second hand pair could go for from around ksh 500/= to ksh 1500/= depending on where you’re shopping.

Nike zoom Pegasus 36 N7

7. A good gym shoe – if you’ve gotten this far, first off thanks for reading this and finally I will bestow this last piece of sneaker knowledge on you. A good gym shoe is an essential even for guys who don’t necessarily go to the gym. A good gym shoe can always substitute as a weekend sneaker and a shoe to just wear regularly. A good gym shoe here means one that is well fitting, has a sturdy sole and is snug around the foot. This is important to maintain balance and to ensure a good handle on rough terrain. I own a pair of Nike prestos and a pair of Adidas running shoes that I completely love. They are both perfect running and exercise shoes as they are very sturdy and maintain a good handle on the ground with ease.

Nike zoom Pegasus Turbo 2.

The best thing about gym shoes is also the wide variety they come in. There is surely something for everyone. These, depending on where you buy them vary in pricing from ksh 1000/= all the way to the tens of thousands. Secondhand they could go for from ksh 300/= to ksh 1500/= depending on where you are shopping. What’s important though is to find a pair that is good quality and in good condition at a fairly reasonable price, it’s also important to be able to distinguish between a running shoe and a hype beast sneaker.

The therapeutic value of silence.

Silence.
The complete and utter absence of sound and noise, an abyss of stillness and emptiness. Last week I wrote about music and it’s significant presence and role in my life and in life in general. Today, I will talk about what is almost the exact opposite of that. Silence is hard to come by and with a small amount of effort you can avoid silence completely for days, months and even years at a time. It is hard to detect silence as it cannot necessarily be heard. Silence is by definition the absence of sound after all. But also with little effort (unless you live next to a highway) silence is easy to come by, even if it may not be utter. In this article I am going to talk about the essence of silence and the therapeutic benefits we can reap from embracing it.
Meditation is an ancient eastern practice of focusing on a specific thought, and while in that state of focus, shunning all other thoughts. It requires silence to practice, but for experienced meditators, it can be carried out in the middle of a noisy bus or in a crowded street. Now even though the beginning of practicing meditation is about external silence and internal focus. Eventually, meditation is about inner silence and peace extending into the outside world. For beginners in meditation it is important to sit in complete silence for large periods of time, simply to be able to clear one’s mind and to focus on a specific thought, like breathing or the visual image of a peaceful beach front.
Meditation is also associated with numbing the sense of physical sight. I say physical sight because in some cases of meditation, it is encouraged to open the inner eye or the conceptual eye to be able to visualize and imagine certain peaceful and centering scenarios. Silence and meditation go hand in hand and with complete silence peace is drawn from the emptiness there in. Seemingly your mind draws peace and stillness from this abundance of silence. A true paradox, if I ever heard one.
I once read a psychology book called mind games, it was a really old book I picked up at the Kenya institute of business and counselling library. It detailed an approach to meditation and therapy that seemed wildly unorthodox to me. It seemed like a weird drug induced utopia of borderline unethical psychology. In this book, mind games were described as something along the lines of being able to visualize in great detail certain conceptual scenes and places. In this book, case studies of these methods were described. A group of people would sit in silence for extended periods of time and while they were at a certain stage in meditation they would be suggested upon scenes and placed to meditate about. They would then be led to fall into a deep trance of meditation where they could experience a large number of scenarios and experiences in an alternate timeline which moved considerably slower that normal time. When the facilitator of this therapy pulled them out of this trance the participants would often be shocked by how little time had actually passed, in comparison to all the time that had passed in their meditative states.  They had seemingly slowed down time through deep trance-like meditation. I have documented this paraphrased excerpt to simply highlight the implications of silence as a tool of inducing peace, calm and relaxation while also potentially having psychoanalytic implications.

An excerpt from mind games.

But silence also takes different forms and conveys different meanings, it can be an indicator of peace, tension, affection among a lot of other things. Silence is good, it helps to point out the things that are around us or within us, the things that give strength to who we are and to how we are to one another. Silence even in being a lack of sound or noise still can be used as a tool to convey, even though it is in a most unorthodox way.
