The first part of a three book series, northern lights sets the scene for an epic adventure in a world resembling ours but different in many ways. The story starts at the Jordan college where we find our protagonist Lyra, living among scholars. She is everything a good protagonist should be,determined, smart, intuitive, and reckless not to mention her mysterious past and a will of steel. We find her and her best friend Roger roaming the grounds of Jordan college and we start to realize that there are things about their world that are unsimilar to ours. Everyone in their world has an animal companion that Pullman calls a ‘demon’. These demons have their existence tied to their humans. Lyra’s demon pantellimon has a personality of his own and acts as a reasonable reflective voice for Lyra. This for me is one of the most interesting concepts in the book, the relationship between demons and humans becomes the subject of our story. When Lyra’s uncle, leaves her at Jordan college to go to the north and children start to disappear all around London including Lyra’s best friend Roger. Lyra joins the gypsies on an expedition to the north to go save the children who have been taken.

This book just makes me feel like a child again. Nothing to remind you of your youth, like a good fantasy novel. So for the first time ever, I decided to read a novel after seeing the tv series. I really do wish I’d have read the novel first so I would have been forced to imagine the characters without any reference to the actors who played the characters in the series. But in this case I didn’t actually end up hating the casting for the tv series, I simply picked the actors I liked and used them in my mental vision of the book. The book is impecably written, the style used is what I regard a classic fantasy style. Pullman’s style of writing is extremely detailed and laced with wonder. He describes and builds on his characters so well that you end up falling in love with some of them and passionately hating others. The story is told by from a third person perspective and the scenes a set vividly so that the locations described stick in your imagination. The story is also extremely imaginative and does not shy away from dark themes like depression and death. This first book in the series however leaves the reader with alot of questions about Lyra and the plot in general, which is actually a really good aspect considering there are other books that follow this one.
Recommendation: I would recommend this story to all lovers of fantasy and wonder. If you enjoyed J. K Rowling’s Harry Potter this is a book that you will definitely enjoy. I would also recommend it for all child readers, it is imaginative and a child will most probably relate either with the main character, Lyra or with the struggles that she faces. Finally I would recommend this book to older readers who want to inject alittle excitement into their reading experience and to feel like they are teenagers again.
Star rating: His dark Materials gets a 4.7/5 from me.
